The hand on that iconic ‘American Beauty’ poster actually belongs to a famous actress

Remember that iconic poster for the Oscar-winning 1999 movie “American Beauty?”

There is the youthful abdomen, the red rose, the perfectly manicured hand meant to symbolize teenage innocence — or not-so innocent in the case of Mena Suvari’s character.

Most people assumed the hand belongs to Suvari. It does not. It belongs to Christina Hendricks of “Good Girls” and “Mad Men” fame.

Here we are 20 years later and the actress revealed Thursday that it’s her hand.

“I used to be a model and sometimes a hand model…. this is my hand and another model’s stomach,” she wrote on Instagram. “Proud to be a part if this film in ANY WAY!!!”

Celebs were quick to weigh in, with comedian Whitney Cummings writing, “This is blowing my mind.”

“This is important. How come I didn’t know this?” commented January Jones.

“IM SHOOK!!!!!!” Elle Fanning wrote.

Alison Brie wrote, “WHOA.”

The movie, also starring Annette Bening and Kevin Spacey won five Academy Awards.
