Our listener wants to repair the relationship with his estranged mother. His mother doesn’t like his fiance and he doesn’t understand why. he does want her to be at the wedding and needs some advice.
Here’s his email:
I really hope someone reads this because I really need some help with my mother. I am a 21 year old recent college graduate who is in a huge bind with my mom. I am engaged to a beautiful, amazing woman who I’ve been with for almost 6 years, who my mom can’t seem to get along with. They have had a love hate relationship for the entirety of our relationship, but it always comes from my mom.
My fiancée is always trying to go out of her way to please her and show her how good of a woman she is for her son, but my mom won’t seem to budge. Our wedding is coming up in May of 2020 and my mom was giving us a lot of good information and opinions on how our wedding should go. We accepted her opinions with care, but it eventually got a little to far. She practically took over the wedding as her own, and when my fiancée said no to one of those opinions, my mom lost her marbles. She freaked out on her and I saying how we don’t associate ourselves with family and we don’t respect her, etc. (which is 100% not true).
Now, it’s been almost 4 months since we have talked and it is really eating away at me because I really love my mom and want to have a relationship with her, but I feel that I can’t if I am still with my fiancée, who I am not planning on leaving anytime soon lol. I realize that I should focus on developing my future with my fiancée and the family that we are planning together, but I feel obligated to reconcile the relationship with my mom. I really don’t know how to handle this situation, so I feel that the Bert Show crew’s intelligent expertise about these things would help me make up my mind. Please help!
